Who Is Bill Ackman
Ackman has a B.A. from Harvard College and a MBA from Harvard Business School. After working at his father’s real estate business, he went on to form Gotham Partners, a hedge fund. This fund, established in 1992 and funded with a $3 million investment, was eventually shut down and investors cashed out a decade later with a sevenfold return (adjusted for inflation) on their original investments.
From there, he went on to form Pershing Square Capital Management, a hedge fund focusing on “long-term value investments” that become heavily involved in public market investments. These are often described as “activist” investments and refer to transactions wherein Ackman acquires a long position in a company and then pushes for positive changes within the company, such as CEO changes and buyouts.
Ackman has been an integral part of significant transactions such as the leveraged buyout of Harrah’s Entertainment, the sale of General Growth Properties to Brookfield Asset Management, and the spin-off of Howard Hughes Corp from General Growth properties.
Ackman is an active philanthropist and has contributed to a variety of causes, including education and animal charities. He is a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations and has appeared on CBS’ 60 Minutes as well as CNBC’s Squawk Box, where he has discussed his investing strategies and outcomes.
Throughout his career, Ackman has earned a reputation for being an unconventional and aggressive investor who is not shy in letting the public know of his positions. However, despite his strong opinionated style, his track record with investments has been very successful. With his strong focus on value investing and long-term strategies, Bill Ackman is highly recognized as one of the most successful value investors of the 21st century.
