I had the chance to catch up with Sandip Sekhon, the founder of the crowdfunding website GoGetFunding. A website that is increasingly growing in popularity and was recently mentioned by Forbes as one of the top 6 crowdfunding sites. Here, he talks about how it all began:

As an online entrepreneur, I’m always looking at how exciting businesses can be made even better. And back in 2010 when I conceived the idea for GoGetFunding, crowdfunding was still pretty new and was just starting to take off.

Kickstarter and IndieGoGo were leading the way and although they were and still are great businesses, there were a number of things that I didn’t like and wanted to change. I didn’t like the strict rules for fundraising on Kickstarter. I thought about all those people that must have been rejected from the site and subsequently abandoned their dreams. And IndieGoGo seemed to lack the buzz of Kickstarter and I felt that the fees (9% if you don’t meet your goal) were outrageous.

After around 9 months of development, GoGetFunding was launched in December of 2011. We gradually started to gain traction and we continually evolved based on fundraiser feedback. For example, we started as an all-or-nothing crowdfunding website. However, most of the people that were raising money wanted to keep the funds regardless – and backers were happy with that too. As a result, we switched the payment process and GoGetFunding continued to grow.

Today, GoGetFunding has helped people from all over the world raise millions online. And we have big plans to ensure that this growth continues by making sure people are able to raise more money online by using our site.

More about crowdfunding

Crowdfunding is an increasingly popular way to raise money for projects and causes. It involves using the internet to ask members of the public for small donations and is becoming an important source of funds for many individuals and organizations across the world.

There are a variety of crowdfunding platforms now available, from popular sites such as Kickstarter and Indiegogo to specialist platforms focused on charitable causes or social issues. Before launching a crowdfunding campaign, it’s important to do your research and choose the most suitable platform for your needs.

Most crowdfunding campaigns require a well-thought-out plan. You should define your goals, create a timeline, set rewards for donors, and develop a PR strategy that includes social media engagement. Once you have all this in place you can start promoting your campaign via your own website, blog, or social media network.

Don’t forget to create incentives for people to give their money away: offering special rewards like merchandise or other exclusives can be an effective way to attract more donations. It’s also important to inform potential donors about what their contributions will achieve if the target is reached; this both motivates them and strengthens their belief in the project.

Finally, some crowdfunding campaigns have time limits – usually one month – so you need to plan your promotional activities carefully in order to maximize visibility in that period. If possible, aim for momentum and keep the buzz going by regularly updating news on progress, sharing positive stories from donors or volunteers, and engaging with people across all channels available.

Crowdfunding has revolutionized the way we can go about raising funds for all sorts of causes. Done right it can be an invaluable channel – but it needs careful planning and preparation if you want to succeed
