The Kik Chat App Is Already Worth 1$ Billion
Have you heard about Kik? Probably you already use it, especially if you are a teenager. I would bet on that because this app is gaining momentum big time. Its registered users have reached about 240 million in no time and this number hasn’t stopped growing. The Canadian startup Kik Interactive, that is responsible for this new ‘unicorn’ in the mobile world, has become a $1 billion company because of the chat application. This number was determined by the 50 million investment made by Tencent for a share of Kik Interactive. The chat is used extremely by youngsters, some statistics show that as many as 40% of teenagers use it to communicate with the world. And the reason for this is that Kik is not an ordinary mobile chat application, there is much innovation in it. Except for exchanging messages with friends, you can use it for a big bunch of things like ordering pizza, call a taxi, play games and even paying your dues. According to Ted Livingston, the founder of the startup, Kik is a whole new way to communicate with the world and this is what makes them different.
The mobile chat business has been a big cash machine for the last few years. Many of Kik’s rivals have made billions for its inventors, too. The founders of the popular chat app WhatsApp cashed in more than $19 billion when Facebook bought it. Last year, the founder of Snapchat was offered $3 billion by Facebook again, but he declined the proposal.
The Story Of Kik Interactive
Kik was founded in 2009 when a small but incredibly passionate group of University of Waterloo students decided to build a company that would shift the center of computing from the PC to the smartphone.
Fast forward to today, and Kik has become the best way to connect with friends, no matter where you meet them. And unlike other messengers, Kik uses usernames – not phone numbers – as the basis for Kik accounts, so our users are always in complete control of who they talk to on Kik.
But Kik isn’t just about our users chatting with their friends. Our marketing tools let brands talk to and share cool content with our users, and track the results. Our developer tools help developers optimize and distribute their web content on Kik. And our built-in browser lets Kik users search for and share cool content and experiences – without leaving Kik, and without downloading anything new.
If you think this was a cool story, please consider sharing it with friends. Sharing is caring!
